I don't know much about Indy, but I had heard of Dan Wheldon and I am truly sorry to hear the awful news about his death. It looked to be an horrific crash from what they showed on the news.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this awful time.

The track itself was totally fine for open wheel racing cars before they reconfigured it and increased the banking..... however, I'm not sure it was appropriate to put 34 open wheelers on track together.........

They had one more entrant for this race than they get at Indy. But Indy is a 2.5 mile track, and LVMS is only 1.5. That's awfully crowded. But IndyCar got what they wanted in offering up a $5 million payout to the winner of this race and opening the entry list to non-series regulars. Scanning the qualifying report now and I see half a dozen people I've never heard of before today.

big shunts like this are an inherent risk of oval track racing, however packing that many cars onto a circuit that's only yay big was not a smart move.

Dan Wheldon died as a result of head injuries sustained in the accident he suffered on the 11th lap of the IndyCar Series finale at Las Vegas, it has been confirmed.

Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy announced on Monday that autopsy results showed the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner's death was caused by blunt trauma to the head.

Wheldon's car was one of several to become airborne during the 15-car accident and made contact with both the debris fencing and SAFER barrier as it hurtled out of control.

"We'll be working with family and IndyCar officials and the attending physicians to fully review the case in an effort to improve safety for drivers," Murphy told The Associated Press.

The IndyCar Series is expected to pay tribute to Wheldon with a public memorial service in the near future in Indianapolis, and a banner has been placed over the entrance gate to Indianapolis MotorSpeedway in honour of the 2005 IndyCar Series champion.

GoDaddy.com, the sponsor of the Andretti Autosport team Wheldon had been poised to join for 2012, has created a memorial site in honour of the 33-year-old. The site includes a Facebook link to leave condolences and a photo retrospective of the driver.

I just read that Greg Moore's father, Ric, was at the race in Vegas. He had only been to one or two other races since Rick's fatal accident at Fontana in 1999.

I'm assuming there you're talking about Greg's fatal accident. As I recall, he was a pretty decent guy too.

Well surely this is not a surprise for those in the know, but this is not the kind of message Indycar was waiting for probably. They're not selling the team by the looks of it, they're just closing down. That's a sad way to go.

I read this news and was absolutely gutted.

NHR was the embodiment of CART and Champ Car to me. They weren't an old USAC team that split from Indy in the late 70s, they came to CART from sports cars. The team was all that was good and great about CART, imo. And Paul Newman in particular was a sworn enemy of Tony George's 'vision'.

It's immensely sad. NHR was the team I worked with (briefly) in the early 2000s, and seeing them go away is.... honestly, it hurts more than Champ Car selling out and mergificating with IndyCar.

To me, this is the real end of CART.
