Postby Funkmother on Wed Jun 08, 2011 4:18 am

Le Mans is on again this weekend. Eurosport will be telecasting the whole race live in my part of the world. For me, this is the biggest sporting event of the year. I can't wait. :yay: :yay: :yay:

The former "Stig" of 8 years will compete in LM this weekend. Ben Collins is one of the drivers in the #36 RML LMP2 Honda.

Its been an incident-packed first qualifying session at Le Mans. Initially the Audis dominated LMP1 before an incident between the leading #1 Audi of Romain Dumas and the Aston Gulf #60 GTE Am car. The session was red flagged but following a restart, Stephane Sarrazin set the fastest lap in his #8 Peugeot 908. The session was stopped permanently before midnight following a very big accident involving the #42 LMP2 car of Strakka Racing who won the class last year. The car was being driven by Nick Leventis at the time. Reports say the car was "completely destroyed" after setting the best LMP2 time. I haven't heard how the driver of that car is doing so I'm hoping no news is good news for the moment.

GTE Pro was initially led by Giancarlo Fisichella in the #51 Ferrari who has really established himself in sports cars since his arrival a year ago. He is sharing a car with Gianmaria Brunni this year. In the end though, it was Joey Hand in the #56 BMW M3 that finished on top in GTE Pro. In GTE Am, it was the #60 Gulf Aston that was leading before its coming together with the #1 Audi. After the session was resumed, the #70 Labre Competition Matmut Porsche took the lead. Larbre Competition are also running the #50 Corvette this year in GTE Am.

The session had been extended following forecasts of rain at Le Sarthe tomorrow night. If that happens, the times from this session are likely to determine the grid positions.

Don'd forget you can follow the race if you don't have the telecast at radiolemans.com.

I predict a win for one of the works Audis. Lets see, ok, the Audi piloted by Bernhard, Dumb Ass and Rockenfella.

I didn't know Ralph Fiennes designed cars. Best of luck to them - it's an interesting car, though intuitively I have to think it will run at an embarrassing pace.

Hopefully embarrassing to the Audis and Peugeots :D

Well you would if you were at the track at the moment. Johnny Herbert is currently doing laps in the Mazda 787B in which he won the race. I'm listening to it on radiolemans.com where incidentally you can get the 2011 spotters guide.

Two and a quarter hours until race start. :yay: :yay: :yay:

By the way, the Audis and Peugeots are looking very evenly matched this year. Too close to call.

The cars are on their formation lap. The Hope Racing Hybrid car #5 appears to have stalled on the grid.

They're underway!

The top 7 cars are diesels. The first petrol powered car is the Rebellion Racing Lola Toyota #12. The first GT car is the #51 AF Corse Ferrari 458 currently being driven by Gianmaria Bruni.

Both Aston Martin AMP prototypes (#007 and #009) are in trouble. The #007 is in the pit. Don't know where #009 has gotten to.

Alan McNish in the #3 Audi has gotten past Franck Montagny in the #8 Peugeot. Its not 3 Audis leading 4 Peugeots.

The GT leader has been lapped 30 minutes into the race.

Shit, there's been a massive accident between Alan McNish and the #58 Ferrari. Very dangerous. Alan is out of the car and is okay. That was one of the biggest accidents I've ever seen. The car almost went over the wall. That was very very nasty. Debris including a wheel went over the wall. There were photographers standing there. We could've had injured bystanders.

Phew. Well, we're down to two Audis. Man, the #58 car is back on track!
