V8 Supercar 2011

Postby Funkmother on Mon Dec 05, 2011 3:47 am

Yeah, a little late to be starting a 2011 thread for a racing series but its the first V8 Supercar race I've seen all year. (Even then I only caught the first half.) To my surprise, the Sydney 500, a street race held on the roads surrounding Sydney's Olympic Park (the venue for the 2000 Olympics) was a cracker with a damp track, high kerbs and concrete canyons, there was plenty of argy bargy with Mark Winterbottom (who looks a lot like Matthew Bellamy from Muse) winning for Ford. It was Jamie Whincup however that sealed the championship finishing eighth beating team mate Craig Lowndes, who finished second, by 35 points.

Adelaide is a good race too (Clipsal 500), has most of the old Grand Prix track.

Some sad news, Jason Richards died.
A nice bloke in a bunch of ratbags. Only 35 too. RIP mate.

Yeah, its a bit rough to lose your life so young. At least he had a good time of it while he was here. RIP

Seen the Clipsal race a number of times but this was the first time I saw the race at Olympic Park. I thought the Clipsal 500 was all of the old GP track. As a local, maybe you can enlighten me.

Couldn't find a good enough map, try this one
Image
Short (red) is V8s, long (black) is F1

Once they took all the armco away, you could get some really good cornering done around the city until the rubber wore away

Nice. Thanks for that. I didn't realise they'd short-cut the F1 track.

He's replacing Greg Murphy for the last races. He raced one race a couple of years ago.

Supercars rock, as much as TC 2000.

I did see Jacques in one race at Toowoomba I think. He started last and got punted into the infield at the end of the first lap. Not exactly an auspicious appearance.

One thing I did read Jacques say in an interview with The Age is that he likes the way he's treated in Supercars. He said when he was in Nascar he was treated like shit. He comes Downunder, has achieved nothing and everyone treats him like a hero. I guess the guys just feel honored that a former world champion would come on over and race in our little Antipodean racing series.

Nice to have you along Jacques!

Hey, I protest. There is nothing little about Ozzie V8, starting with the level of competition. Frankly, I enjoy much more TC and V8 than F1... 8) Besides, the drivers are foul mouthed, nothing beats that, even Brian Johnson (AC/DC singer) wants to race in them.

Highway to hell anyone?

Well AC/DC are an Aussie band. Of course, everyone here knows that.

Speaking of V8s, there'll be a new driver on the grid of the Gold Coast 600 in October. His name is Nick Heidfeld. :yay:
