24 Heures du Mans and World Endurance Championship 2012

Postby Funkmother on Sun Feb 05, 2012 10:29 pm

The entry list for this year's Le Mans 24 Hour race has been released confirming Peugeot's withdrawl from sports car racing. Audi expand their entry to 4 cars, two of them hybrids. Toyota enter the fray with a brace of hybrid cars in addition to the Toyota-powered Lola coupes of Rebellion racing. Alex Wurz is confirmed as a driver for the Toyota factory team. Oak racing returns with three cars, one less than 2011. They'll have one car in LMP1 and two in P2. Pescarolo are there with two cars; one of their own chassis and one from Dome. Both Pescarolo cars will be powered by Judd engines. Nicolas Minassian will be driving the Dome. Also of note in LMP1 is that Strakka racing are moving up from LMP2 to P1. They won P2 in 2010 but had difficulties last year.

The P2 field this year will be dominated by Nissan-powered cars, 11 in all, six of them with Oreca chassis. Greaves motorsport who won P2 with a Nissan in 2011 doubles its entry to two cars.

Absent from the prototype lineup is Aston Martin who indicated last year they were on a long development curve with their AMR One. Their cars were the first to exit from the 2011 race. Aston Martin pilot Stefan Mucke will be seen racing in their Vantage entry in GTE Pro. The rest of that category will be contested by two Porsche 911s, two Corvettes and 4 Ferrari 458s. Its a similar line up in GTE Am but with 12 cars instead of the 9 in Pro. Absent are the Lotus Evoras we saw last year but they are second reserve in GT.

Its interesting to see that Olivier Pla will drive the third Oak Racing entry and Alex Brundle, son of Martin, will be driving in the second Greaves entry.

The new Pescarolo chassis will be based on Aston Martin's failed AMR-ONE chassis. Aston shut down the project around October. They reverted to their former Lola-chassis car following their disasterous prototype performance at the Le Mans 24 hour. Henri Pescarolo described the AMR-ONE chassis as "superb" and it will form the basis of his new LMP1 design taking delivery of two AMR-ONE tubs built by Prodrive.

It took the commentary from the crew at radiolemans.com for me to notice that BMW have also withdrawn from endurance racing including the LM24h to focus on their DTM effort. So Le Mans and the new World Endurance Championship loses Peugeot (one of the main proponents of the championship) and BMW completely as well as Aston Martin's protype effort and Lotus' GT entries with the Evora. It means that the GT class is now limited to 4 makes of car; Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette and Aston Martin. That's sad.

Conversely and as an aside since I don't intend to cover this in detail, the 12 hour of Bathurst which is due to take place in a week and half's time has a diverse field including Lamborghini (LP 560 and 600 GT3s), Ferrari (458s), Audi (R8), Mercedes Benz (SLS), Mosler, Porche (996 and 997s), Lotus (Exige), Corvette, BMW, HSV, Subaru, Ford, Mazda, Mini, Honda and Seat.

Ahh...Mosler. Constructor of awesome cars that no one ever gets to see.

Unless you go slot car racing...

I saw a Mosler (probably the same one) race in one of the 24 hour Bathurst races (I think they only had two).

I am eternally jealous for two reasons: You've actually seen a Mosler and the 24 hour at Bathurst.

I've always been a bit surprised that no one went with the "split window" design of the original Raptor, guessing it was made illegal along with the rest of that car....

The 80th running of the world's greatest motor race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, on 16 and 17 June is drawing near. A test day was held over the weekend with the majority of competitors and 23,000 spectators present. The Audi R-18 e-tron hybrids set the best time followed by one of the Audi R-18 non-hybrid cars which are designated "Ultra". The Toyota hybrids placed 4th and 5th in the tests. Alan McNish reckons in terms of outright speed, the Toyotas are actually faster than the Audis.

The Oak Racing #35 Morgan-Judd was fastest in LMP2 but I would expect the Nissan-powered P2 cars to dominate in the race.

In GTE Pro the #59 Ferrari 458 was fastest followed by the #74 Corvette whereas in GTE Am, the Aston Martin Vantage V8 dominated.

The Nissan Delta Wing also ran during the test. In the race, it will run in the one-off demonstration category. It was being piloted by Marino Franchitti.

Technical scrutineering begins around the same time as the Canadian GP.

Sebastien Loeb placed well in the Le Mans test setting the 5th fastest in LMP2 and 18th fastest overall in his ORECA 03. Loeb is not competing in the 80th running of the 24 hour but the Test Day allows selected non-competing teams to see how they measure up. Sebastien Loeb Racing is a competitor in the European Le Mans Series. Sebastien himself said he hadn't run at Le Mans since 2006 and remarked, "It’s a bizarre sensation at the wheel…the apexes, I see them after I pass them!"

Here are some links that might prove useful:

Eurosport are broadcasting the whole race in most places. There is a program guide here.

If you can't get Eurosport, commentary is streamed live at radiolemans.com.

Check here for the extremely useful Le Mans spotter's guide.

The Le Mans Legends race was good. Great group C action. It was won by one of the Mercedes.
