Alternative is, by definition, NOT mainstream. Lol.

Well, I know of a solution for this dilemma.

Stanislaw Lem has this story about a guy that thinks there are three kinds of geniuses:

First kind: immediately recognized by his contemporaries, like Michelangelo.
Second kind: it takes some years to recognize them, like Van Gogh
Third kind: NEVER recognized

The guy behind this theory is a very rich person, a multimillionaire.

He explains that the collective mind of humankind is like a river.

Some times this collective stream of thoughts forked or included currents previously abandoned (hence, second kind geniuses).

However, some quiet pools or other branches were left behind and never incorporated into the main stream (that explains third kind geniuses). Humankind, following this development, ignored paths that, being so alien to mainstream, were never followed and therefore will be forever ignored.

So, his theory is that, to find geniuses of the third kind, he should search mental hospitals, jails, piles of refuse, those dark places where you can find what humankind rejects because we do not understand.

Being a millionaire he launches an international search, with a team of trained people, looking for third kind geniuses works that could, perhaps, enrich the collective understanding of things.

Many years pass and some original works are found but nothing notable. The rich guy is despairing.

Suddenly, one of his researches comes with a very strange manuscript, found in the Seville Archives, in Spain. Experts are confused: the manuscript seems to point to incredibly advanced concepts in mathematics, very obscure, but sometimes it seems to wander in gibberish and be written by a madman.

After a lot of examination he discovers that the manuscript is a fake. It has been written by the researcher that claimed to have discovered it.

The millionaire, in rage, summons the researcher that counterfeited the manuscript to his office. He nags the researcher and expels him from the quest for third kind geniuses. He threatens the researcher with huge lawsuits for making him lose time and money. The researcher, in shame, leaves the office scared.

Suddenly, the millionaire realizes he has found a third kind genius: the researcher. He is never able to locate the counterfeiter again.

I never attempt. I do. You, of course, are not obliged to read, but I have to write. My most sincere apologies to those in a hurry for not following the rules of being concise and understandable at first sight. I know that confusion is not as clearly appreciated as it could be nor will be understood by those easily confused when confused. 8)

O mio bambino caro -- Nellie Melba

BTW, don't you think that there is a strong resemblance between Morisette and Melba?

Nellie and Alanis could be twins!

Yeah, I know, Morisette is a Canadian mezzo-soprano and Melba is an Australian soprano, but besides that... It's not like if we were talking about Austrian or Franco-German contraltos, are we? ( Ernestine Schumann-Heink and Sigrid Onégin come to my mind, of course).

The latest Fear Factory album was even worse than Britney Spears, as such I have now started listening to open source music.
