Only partially correct. ;)

Norwegian Symphonic Extreme Metal. :hihi:
So in other words, some form of Nordic Black Metal.

Yea, Heavy Metal seems to have all kinds of sub-categories....so what is the difference between "Symphonic Extreme Metal" and someone like say Motley Crue?

Well, let's take the similarities first. Both usually played by band with drums and guitar. :hihi:

As for traditional Black Metal the differences are mostly a different sound, an atmosphere and darker lyrical themes. The distortion is sounding very different from Heavy Metal and it may not be heavy at all some times due to the distortion. furthermore in order to be called Symphonic Metal there must be clean vocals and very technical melodic parts.

Extreme Metal or Symphonic Extreme.. is the same as it's Black Metal counterparts only with an even more extreme distortion. Look. In the vid below there is a 1996 release by Dimmu Borgir.

If that is not extreme enough remember it came in 1996... :hihi: but nevertheless. Bewarned. There is noise there.
