Moss Retires from competetive driving.

Postby Warweezil on Fri Jun 10, 2011 7:01 am

Sir Stirling Moss has retired from competitive driving. At 81 he feels that it is time for him to give up the sport that he loves saying " "I have always said that if I felt I was not up to it or that I was getting in the way of fellow competitors, then I would retire.
I love racing, but now it is time to stop.".

I had hoped to see him drive at the Goodwood revival which he regularly appears at, but it seems I have left it too late.

I thought he retired in 1963.

Never saw Moss drive, but it was always cool to watch Dan Gurney trash everyone around the streets of Long Beach in the Toyota pro/celebrity sedan race.

I could have sworn Moss retired when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. :armchair:

Well it's a shame but it's probably for the best. He did well to come back after that incdent with the lift shaft didn't he? I hope he enjoys his retirement.

There's a difference between retiring from professional racing and retiring from all racing. Stirling made the announcement prior to taking to the track for the Le Mans Legends support race held prior to the start of the 24 Hour. He brought his own Porsche RS 61 to compete in the event.

I've been fortunate to see him drive numerous times in the historic demos at the Aussie GP. I can tell you one thing, he always appeared to be having a good go and not just plodding along doing slow laps like some of the others. I recall a beautiful four wheel drift lap after lap one year in a Maserati through the fast left right of turns 11 and 12.
